NEW TECHNOLOGY OPTION — There’s an app for that!!

First Presbyterian Church of Elizabeth and the Old First Historic Trust are pleased to announce the release of the first edition of an iPhone App designed for visitors to the church’s historic Burial Grounds. Users can search for the names of persons interred using a variety of criteria and learn more about them, including the epitaph inscribed on their headstones.

ImageThe App is available through the App Store on the iPhone under the listing “FPC Cemetery”. It currently runs only on devices with iOS6. There is a $3 one-time fee, proceeds from which go to support maintenance of the grounds. Subsequent updates will, of course, be free.

The app was developed as a class project by students in the Computer Science Department at Kean University. They are eager to receive your feedback so they can add features and make it more user friendly.

Research and Development of the database was funded by the New Jersey Historic Trust through a grant from the Historic License Plate Fund.

The app will be discussed in a technology workshop (session S-13) at the upcoming NJ Historic Preservation conference in Newark on June 6.

A version for Android-powered phones will be released soon.

  1. This is great. I’m trying out a different one now: Catholic Cemeteries of Newark! I definitely hope to see more of these apps. The Catholic one seems to have only recent burials-last 50 years or so–but it’s a start.
